Trevor's Trip to Triumph - 4th ANNUAL RIDE - Sunday August 17, 2014
Trevor’s Trip to Triumph is being held to raise money for the Children’s Craniofacial Association and to spread awareness about children with Craniofacial Abnormalities. We started this fundraiser as a way to support an organization that is near and dear to our hearts, has become a significant part of our family and has made a significant impact on our lives.
Trevor is the inspiration behind this event. He was our first child, born in 2002 with a craniofacial abnormality called Hemifacial Microsomia which affects children differently. For Trevor this means the right side of his face grew asymmetrically to the left side of his face, causing difficulties in eating and speaking, affecting his vision and hearing on the right side, the absence of his right ear, and internal complications with his sinuses causing frequent infections. He is sick a LOT. He misses a LOT of school. He has undergone 6 surgeries so far, with many more to come before he is done growing. But despite Trevor’s differences, he is a normal 11 year old boy who loves to swim, play video games, bowl, and play with his friends. And now, due to his age and a new school, its' been a tough year and hard adjustment for Trevor as new children are teasing and making remarks about his looks...
Our family became involved with the CCA when we attended our first annual retreat in 2010. It was such an amazing and emotional experience to meet other children and other families sharing our medical experiences. Trevor was able to make friends that have experienced similar situations, both positively and negatively and got to see that he was not alone, and how brave, confident and well adjusted these children are. This event allows the children and their families to interact in an atmosphere where they do not stand out and an escape from the everyday emotional, social, & physical pressures that a majority of children never have to experience. CCA provides the opportunity for the parents to bond as well, and share advice.
In addition to the annual family retreat, the CCA provides educational, emotional, & financial support to families while they are traveling to multiple craniofacial clinics, preparing for and recovering from surgical procedures, and trying to make decision for the best medical care (in some cases not covered by insurance) for their child.
